Boon Pickens | Does he really care?

Who is Boon Pickens?

Mr Thomas Boon Pickens Jr, American oil tycoon and monopolist, has recently come to the headlines in his July 8th announcement of the “Pickens Plan“. Is this just a scam to divert billions of government dollars to help develop an ineffecient system of wind powerplants across America with his corporation Mesa Power as a middleman? Why is Pickens spending $58 million on advertising for his plan? Well, to find out I looked into his past.

The past of Boon Pickens

Boon Pickens founded his own company in 1954 after working for Phillips Petroleum. He was able to acquire Hugoton Production Company in 1968 and by the 1980s, his company developed into one of the largest independant oil companies in the world. After that, he became interested in the game of influencing political leaders / organizations.  He was a supporter of George W Bush before his 2004 election, and also founded groups to attack the reputation of John Kerry. An interesting article on one of his anti-Kerry undertakings can be found here. Pickens is also known for his charitable giving, he has donated over $400 million to Oklahoma State University and a major help in the Hurrican Katrina relief effort.

Boon Pickens Today

Today Boon Pickens wishes to end the dependence on foreign oil and wishes to capitalize on the strong winds along the plains of the US and use more natural gas. Below I have linked a video from his website:

I really enjoyed watching the video done by T Boon Pickens. He really lays out the facts so that the average person can understand them, and shows Americans that we have great future energy potential. I hope every adult in the US watches this video. He may be leaving out some energy sources, such as oil from algae, etc, but it’s frightening to see how dependant we have become on foreign oil- and how much it will sap our economy if the current trend continues.
This energy crunch has helped in some way to spur us on to further scientific developments, and individual efforts to reduce wasteful use of oil. I was also happy that he mentioned automobiles using compressed natural gas as fuel- as I have been looking into this possibility for my family.

This plan is already underway. I would suggest to everyone to invest in General Electric as they create the turbines.
