Obama Endorses Islamic Mosque Near Ground Zero

Obama tonight endorsed the building of an Islamic mosque very close to ground zero as he was enjoying a Ramadan iftar dinner at the white house. This is sure to cause a lot of opposition, and division through this president’s prominent support a time where such evident support is not warranted nor deserved. Freedom of religion does not equate to freedom to funnel an exorbitant amount of resources into a huge mosque that will dominate the landscape, overshadowing the crumbled remains of the World Trade Center towers where thousands died. New York city already has 100 mosques, it can build another at least more than two blocks from the site of the 9/11 attacks. The planners should especially be sensitive to the victims’ families of the 9/11 attacks.

Out of sympathy for the dead, it would be appropriate for the planners of this Mosque construction to relocate further from the site of devastation, instead of build it as some sort of perceived trophy or insult. A successful construction would not be a victory for freedom, but simply an insult to those hurt by 9/11. Another point is the name of the center: ‘Cordoba House’, which is the name of the city that became the capital of the Muslim Moor Empire after the conquest of Catholic Spain in the Medieval Ages. Regardless of Obama’s true religion, he should not be forcing an Islamic mosque to be built near ground zero.

This is not a debate about freedom of religion, it is a debate of whether a group of people should build a Islamic monument as close as possible to ground zero, and why our president is becoming involved in the decision. The best remedy for this situation is for the aforementioned group of people to be more considerate and move the building somewhere else, as to stop the hurt they have already caused our nation – division.
